What I Want to Replace What I Really Want

January 10, 2011

Yes, this is a tad bit selfish, but I’m going to share the handbag of my dreams with all of you.  The Bloomsbury PM in Damier Ebene canvas by wonder-designer Louis Vuitton.  We are in love.  It happened over the weekend.  My mother and I took a trip to Neiman Marcus for her LV calendar refills.  I followed her into the store, and there is was – the Bloomsbury.  I gasped, I tried it on, and I fell head-over-heels for an $870 handbag.

Needless to say, $870 is not in a blogger’s budget.  Try as I might – and I did – I just couldn’t reason the purchase to myself (and I’m usually pretty good at that).  “No,” I thought, “I would be doing my readers a disservice.”  Fashion should be affordable, and I’m determined to find you an affordable alternative to this beautiful Unicorn bag.  Well, I am determined for you and for me, because I really want that bag!

Ok, here is the original, in all its modern, functional, and feminine French glory.  The bag features a long cross-body strap, perfect for traveling or just forging the wilds of the mall.  There is an outside zipper pocket, an interior flat pocket, and one interior phone pocket.  Not too shabby, this shouldn’t be too hard.  Of course, there is no replacing the brown finish engraved Louis Vuitton plate – the bag’s true “icing on the cake” – but I will not be dismayed, I am determined to find a better deal!

Now for the runners up.  Here’s what I found, ladies, in a variety of colors and styles. Unfortunately for us gals with tight purse strings, LV bags are always in fashion and go well with everything.  Wait a minute…am I reasoning away an $870 handbag?  No, no, I’m not getting off course.  As I was saying, sure an LV will go with everything, but what’s the fun in that?!  (Better, better.)  For your consideration, I’ve included a selection on alternative bags that come in a variety of colors.  Each one may not go with everything, but you can choose the color to best compliment your wardrobe.  Your selection starts now…

The Sak SilverLake Flap Crossbody Bag

The name says it all on this one.  Silverlake, CA is known for it’s unique “hipster” population of twenty-something trendy kids, typically viewed (mostly by themselves) as “too cool for school.”  Well, this handbag is pretty cool with its fold-over flap, doubling as a roomy zip pocket. I love the glazed leather look and geometric design.  And, like our LV dream bag, this little number boasts an interior zip pocket with wall and cell phone pockets as well.  With arguably more storage than it’s $870 counterpart, the Sak’s version is available at Nordstroms for only $84.90 (yes, I found it on sale ladies).

Lucky Brand The Dreamer Crossbody

This is another bag I love for the name alone.  “The Dreamer,” evokes my exact sentiment of dreaming about Louis Vuitton.  Alas.  Seriously though, this is a great bag, and Lucky is always a durable buy.  Available at PiperLime for just over $100, I think it’s a solid option.  This bag might even be a bit bigger than the LV Bloomsbury, and certainly looks like it can hold a lot.  Available in gray or red, it might not be as universal as more neutral black and brown tones, but it can’t hurt to throw a touch of color into your wardrobe.  Go for it, and give this bag a try.

Fossil Executive Flap Satchel

Alright ladies, this is my third and final option for you.  I’m stopping at three because, honestly, it’s not that hard to find a good cross-body bag.  A quick Google search will find you all kinds of LV-alternative brands, just do me the favor and do not buy a knock-off.  You’re not fooling anybody, honey!  The Executive Satchel by Fossil is a fabulous option for the working girl on the go.  The strap on this one is detachable, making for a superbly functional bag.  Carry your new modified briefcase to work in the AM, attached the long cross-body strap, and head out for a casual drink in PM.  At $148, it’s a tad more money, but – hey – you’re getting a two-for-one here.  Check out Macy’s for all the deets and available colors.  We think you might really like this one.  And, at the end of the day, $148 is a much better deal than $870.  I’ll be waiting for Mr. Tall Dark & Handsome to buy me the real deal.
